The Manitou Springs Finance Department has released sales tax figures for August-December 2022, with comparisons to statistics for 2020 and 2021.
Taxable sales amounted to $13,607,929 in August 2020, $16,843,540 in August 2021 and $16,533,939 in August 2022. For September, the amounts were $11,777,298 in 2020, $15,172,980 in 2021 and $16,191,197 in 2022.
October’s taxable sales totaled $10,714,268 in 2020, $13,127,360 in 2021 and $13,461,292 in 2020. For November, sales were $9,851,100 in 2020, $10,734,584 in 2021 and $10,357,381 in 2022.
December’s taxable sales were $10,311,275 in 2020, $12,080,725 in 2021 and $11,718,501 in 2022.
In August 2020, the city collected $838,075 in sales taxes. In August 2021, it was $962,987 and, in August 2022, it had climbed to $1,066,026. Similar increases can be seen in September, October, November and December when comparing those years.
Sales tax collections totaled $7,133,635 in 2020, climbed to $9,464,888 in 2021 and to $10,757,534 in 2022. Manitou’s sales tax increased to 3.9 percent in July 2020, with 3.5 percent going to the city’s General Fund, 0.1 percent to the Open Space Fund and 0.3 percent to the Manitou Arts, Culture, and Heritage fund.
Looking at categories for December 2022 sales:
- Amusement/Bars totaled $427,894;
- Shops — Gift, etc. totaled $2,624,869;
- Stores — Food/Gas totaled $135,808;
- Motels, B&B, etc. totaled $809,277;
- Restaurants totaled $867,213;
- Other in city totaled $2,695,615; and
- Outside city totaled $4,157,825.
The grand total for December’s taxable sales was $11,718,501.
Vendors report and remit sales tax proceeds in the month after the close of the reporting period, and the city receives them from the state the month after that. Some vendors report quarterly tax collections and some report annual tax collections, and some pay previous delinquencies, which can distort monthly sales.
