Hiking Bob: Outdoor job opportunities; register for mountain races

News  /  Hiking Bob

If you’re looking for a job in the outdoor recreation industry, then the upcoming Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance and Pikes Peak Workforce Center’s Job Fair is must-attend for you. The job fair will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 at the El Paso County Citizens Service Center (1675 Garden of the Gods Road in Colorado Springs). Military veterans get early access beginning at 10 a.m. If you’re a prospective employer who wants to participate, go to the PPWFC website to register.

Speaking of outdoor opportunities, the Rocky Mountain Field Institute is currently looking for a field instructor and for environmental leadership interns. For more information, click here. If you’re an undergrad, RMFI is also looking for participants in its Earth Corps Field Studies program. Participants will spend 18 days working on the Devil’s Playground Trail on Pikes Peak’s west face, while learning trail construction and other skills. For more information and to apply, click here.

If you’re a runner, a couple of iconic mountain racing events in the Pikes Peak region are now open for registration.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park’s Cheyenne Mountain Run has 5, 10 and 25K routes, with the 25K following the Dixon Trail to the top of Cheyenne Mountain and and then returning to the trailhead. While the Oct. 7 race date seems like it’s a long way off, entry fees are cheaper the earlier you register, and there is a 400-person cap for the 25K run. The 25K also serves as a qualifier for the Pikes Peak Marathon. For more information and to register, go to the Friends of Cheyenne Mountain State Park website.

The Pikes Peak Ascent — a half-marathon to the top of Pikes Peak via the Barr Trail — and Marathon to the top (and then back down) America’s Mountain will take place Sept. 16 and 17. Registration for both events is now open — click here for the Ascent, and here for the Marathon. By the way, the marathon is the oldest continuously held marathon in the U.S. and draws runners from all over the world.
