The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office reported a female died in custody on Jan. 20, the first of the year following a deadly 2022 when nine inmates died
In a release, the Sheriff’s Office said about 5 p.m. on that day, a deputy found the inmate unresponsive in her assigned cell. “The deputy began lifesaving measures while calling for medical assistance over her issued radio. Medical staff and Sheriff’s staff within the Jail responded,” the release said. “Life saving measures were initiated by Sheriff’s Office personnel and medical staff until responders from the American Medical Response (AMR) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department took over medical care. Despite life saving measures, the inmate passed away.”
Release of the inmates name is pending notification of next of kin. The cause is under investigation by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
